need help guys,

I read a post my PTPP couple of years ago about joining ropes of different diameter using figure-8s on a bight (at the end) joined together with lockers. Then a butterfly knot on the thinner rope, attached with a locker to the main rope.

I can't find that post now. Can someone point me to it please. I have to do that setup in a few days. tks

Why would you want to do this?

The rethreaded figure 8 (flemish bend) to join the ropes before tying the butterfly knot is overkill.

A simple double fishermans knot saves rope and is plenty strong. Since the butterfly knot takes the weight, it'll also remain easy to untie. This modification was incorporated when the knot appeared as a TechTip in Climbing, if I remember correctly.

From what i understand the last knot you would want to use is the Double fisherman when joining ropes of different diameter? From what i have learned they can actually roll over the other knot of lesser diameter? Anyone else?

double fishermans is the way to go, I changed from the EDK to double fishermans when i use a small rap line with my lead line because EDK can roll over. Double fishermans is bomber for this.

egads, not again...

Do NOT use this knot (the "Alpine Butterfly") for joing two ropes for a double-rope rappel.

You should use a Euro Death Knot for that.

We've discussed this before. The in-line overhand knot (a.k.a. the "EDK") is one of the many preferred knots used to join 2 ropes.

from my sailing years, if there were two ropes to be tied togther and they are of different diameter, one of the best knots is the sheedbend knot

The knot that the original poster wanted to find again is used to join two ropes as a fixed line, NOT to join ropes for rappelling.

The sheet bend should never be used for climbing, since it is way to insecure a knot for life-support use. In the same way, however, that a square knot can be used for rappelling by tying backup double overhand knots, a sheet bend might be fine for that very purpose (rappelling) in the event that you are using two ropes of very different diameter. No climbing book or magazine has ever endorsed this setup, though, so you wouldn't want to use it if you are concerned about safety.
