Just got the new Alpinist in the mail and read about Potter messing up bad on a BASE jump, badly injuring his hands. Any more information out there? :?:

Go read it. It's an excellent piece of writing. I am pretty impressed with it. Go Dean.

Jeebus. I thought I was going to be making one awful phone call. I don't know nothin' about a BASE jumping accident, but Dean still walks among us, and writes too, it would seem.

i heard something about this (probably distorted) a couple months ago...something like: jumps, chute collapses, grabs photog's nearby rope, slides 100's of feet down rope, horribly flayed hands... looking fwd to reading the real tale.

In reply to: Dean S. Potter To fly with the swallows, you first have to fall. America’s boldest climber takes the plunge in Mexico—and finds that gravity works just fine south of the border, too. true or not, dean seems to think pretty highly of himself.

I just saw him and Steph giving some presentation at the Patagonia store in Georgetown (DC) a few weeks ago. He didn't say anything about it, and he and Steph were leaving that night to go to another Patagonia store, so did the accident happen VERY recently? I saw his hands/fingers and although they looked large (I'm 6'3" and I'm told *I* have large fingers), I didn't see any crazy scarring.

Grrrr. I wish our local climbing store wasn't run by a japanese couple who don't even know english, much less anything about the gear they are selling. :( I wouldn't be able to buy the mag in this town even if I had the money.

Ewing made $750M before starting Alpinist. I think they've got all the support they need.

I can barely afford gas money, and you want me to cough up more dough for alpinist? Would anyone with the story just explain it (you don't even have to infringe copyrights)?

shoot failed to open... managed to get close enough to the static line in the cave he was jumping in to catch his fall, but in the processes burning his hands down to the bone... he's alive though (and in retrospect sees at least three events proceeding to the shoot failing to open where he KNEW jumping was a bad idea - rushing, conditions, etc)
