a pair of prusiks and my belay device never leave my trad harness. my sport harness usually is empty of gear, although it has been known to hold an atc now and then. my shield, when its on, usually sports my spare aid ladders, a grigri, lockers, jumars, gloves, etc.

Interesting how what I carry on my harness has changed over the years since the days when we climbed without harnesses. Nowadays I always have a gri-gri and B52 belay devices, a PAS daisy chain, a small knife, a small crescent wrench for tightening loose bolts, and often a small pruning shears for cleaning vegetation.

Excluding the rack: ATC on a locker Sometimes a reverso on a locker in addition Cordalette and sometimes an extra double length sling, each on a locker. Two small lockers for anchors Nut tool on a biner Safety (sling) girth hitched to my harness and with a locker Sometimes, but rarely, a prussik cord I keep meaning to find another decent small knife that's cheap (free!) Holy crap that's six or seven lockers. Oh well, weight training, eh! If I take any of these things off, I tend to forget to put them back on for when I need them. Obviously if I'm climbing sport I dump most of this.

I just bought an extra chaulk bag, the cheapest I could find, and use it for my "trad" kit. That way when I'm sportin (90% of the time until I learn to lead a bit better- like at all) it just stays in the pack

The only thing that never leaves my harness in my personal prussik tyed to a gear loop and a ATC and Locker. Every thing is else optional. Things I don't understand Some people say that they "always carry" two belay devices or two belay devices and a decender? Is that not overkill? If you drop you belay device use a munter hitch. Also there is no reason to "always" have both an ATC and a figure 8 on ones harness Just use the ATC to rappel on. Just a thought

At the rear haul loop is a chalk bag, bail link, and a prussik. Side loops, webbing, lockers, ATC, Reverso (yes, two belay devices, I have had a partner drop his, plus I have some weird quirk that makes me not like using the Reverso to belay a leader), daisy, and a nut tool. Additional items added as necessary.

2 prussicks and a knife. there's always a knife in the zippered comparment of my chalkbag. my chalkbag is tied on with a piece of cord i can use for an emergency prussik. and for sketchy rappels there's always a short prussik handily wrapped around my right leg loop.

In reply to: this may be stupid, but what do all yall use the knife for? Cutting things. Things like old rap slings, a cordellete or long piece of webbing to make a new rap anchor, the tail of a rope if it gets stuck in a crack during a rappel, tape, sausage and cheese. You know, the usual stuff.

Also, ryan- I dont live far from charlotte, and I'm gonna go to either crowders or rumbling bald the week between christmas and new years. (or maybe after) Have own gear. PM if interested.

In reply to: Yea what have y'all actually used the prussik for? I usually have the cord on my harness or in my pack but have never actually used it. Many things...such as: -Rap back-up -Improvised ascension -The ratchet in an improvised hauling system -Reinforcing bunk anchor slings lots of other stuff too. I don't leave the ground on anything more than a pitch or 2 long without one. -Nubbler

In reply to: Yea what have y'all actually used the prussik for? I usually have the cord on my harness or in my pack but have never actually used it. When I carry a prusik loop, I have it in case I need to ascend a line or back up a rappel. The diameter is too small for use in anchor system, as 5 or 6mm perlon (my 5.5mm spectra cord is too stiff to be used in an ascending knot) is just a hair too skinny for greater than body weight applications.
