I don't know how I first noticed this, but I was browsing around RC.com (as I usually do at work) and couldn't find the Community forum in the forums list. I looked everywhere and still couldn't find it!!!! Then I realized that the reason I wasn't seeing it was because I wasn't logged in, and was browsing as an "outsider".

So that got me wondering, what other forums are hidden to outsiders? Here's what I found:

So the Community forum is hidden to outsiders... probably a good idea considering all that gets discussed in there!!!!!

But then I also noticed that The Ladie's Room is also missing from the list. I was a little more confused about that one, since I assume it probably contains usefull information for women out there. However, since some of the topics are very touchy/feminine, I could see users not wanting it to be open to the general public.

Of course, I left the best for last, and what do you know, the Bouldering forum can't be viewed if you're not logged in!!!!!!!! Now, with a HUGE stretch of the imagination I could *maybe* see the managers of the site not wanting this forum open to public view for liability reasons, but come on, it's not like the Aid and Trad forums are that much better in that regard. Or, maybe, just maybe, as an inside joke one of the original creators didn't want to advertise to the world of non-users that RockClimbing.com had a *gasp* Bouldering forum!!!!!!! Or it could just be a benign mistake in the process of creating the site.

So which is it? I'll leave it open to speculation and the usual rage that will erupt from rc.com, but a couple words from some of the managers/coders would be nice 8^)

That`ll be me you`ll be wanting to hear from.

We are principaly a rock climbing site. The community forum is a great place to hang out around the camp fire so to speak and shoot the breeze and just yabber on about nothing and everything. The trouble is that the tards and trolls took that place over and were creating all sorts of problems.

By and large the community forum is a much kinder and gentler place now than it used to be. We took the decision to have that forum not reflect to the front page as well as not in the forum list unless a user was logged in. That stopped a lot of drive by shooting trolls, spam and flamefests.

The Ladies room was thought to be in a different category and we decided that it would be best if the ladies were somewhat protected and out of the full glare of the internet pervs out there if you get by drift. We want to look after our ladies and rc.com is the better for having them around thus we made the decision to make that forum only viewable when people are logged in.

Now to the bouldering forum. For the short term at least we are stopping it from being viewed by all except when logged in. This is experimental only to see what effect it has on the quality of the posts in that forum. It is merely the management tweeking things to help improve your internet experience.

We believe that it is better to cater for the many over the few who make things difficult. Let`s see how this turns out, I`m hoping that the quality of posts improves in that forum when the drive by shooting trolls start to have to work a little harder to keep up with things in there.

Note that there will always be a bouldering forum.

I don't think anything should be set in stone. Can't we have that forum liquidated for their impudence?

Why don't we have a trolling forum, just for trolling?

I just wanted to request the re-opening of the bouldering forum to non-users. My browser is set to block all cookies, and therefore I usually visit rc.com as a non-user. And I enjoy reading the bouldering forum (and wondered where it went).

Just my two cents.

Thanks,
Dan

Your request has been noted. I`m not promising anything yet however I wish to see how things go with the change before considering changing back.

From the looks of it, the quality sure has risen. Here's a list of the most recently posted to threads in the forum:

"coolest/funniest boulder problem names"

"easiest problem you would bother to name?"

"New Record???" (about some kid claiming to be the youngest to climb V12)

"Bouldering popularity a myth? marketing ploy?"

"Why are trad climbers fatter than boulderers?"

Do I need to log in to view the "why are rc.com mods so anal" thread?

Not having the Bouldering forum appear unless you are logged in has to be one of the most stupid "improvements" ever made around here. Perhaps, similarly, the Aid forum should not show up, unless you are logged in? I mean, really. Those aid guys are weird, have plenty of their own flame wars, drink OE and are generally pretty offensive. Or, maybe NO forums should be readable until you log-in? Somebody in charge of "improvements" around here clearly has too much time on his/her hands. I suggest they get laid and try to unwind a little. Haha.

If the bouldering forum is going to be hidden from non-users, maybe it shouldn't show up on the front page either. i surf from work sometimes, and don't bother to log in, just quick browsing if there's anything interesting-sounding on teh front page. I've noticed a couple of times that what's apparently a bouldering thread looks interesting, yet when i click i'm prompted to log in. a bit of inconsistency that's all.

What's with the descrimination and alienation of a particular climbing group. It really makes the rest of the climbing population here look narrow minded.

climbing = bouldering = sport = trad = aid = ice = goodness

Personally I think the majority of RC.com's forums should be hidden from the public.

It's been said before, but I'll repeat it here:

Bouldering is to climbing as masturbation is to sex; it is something to be shameful of. Duh.

Which reminds me, i'm going to bishop tomorrow! woohoo!

The bouldering forum should be hidden. It is a sad, embarrassing affair. Yes, this is a rock climbing site. It is not a bouldering site. As in, there are only a few dedicated boulderers here and most of them are really old. REALLY OLD, grandfather old.

So you see, the bouldering forum is not reflective of the community of boulderers unless you kill everyone over the age of 30. You will note the correct spelling of "Bouldering" as a dead give away.

Sorta like engaging in sport climber talk at rec.climbing lol!
