I'm not sure where you can buy climbing gear because I've just started. I've only went 6 times and used my friends gear so we had to switch on and off. When you've just started climbing do you need as much as the better climbers? What all do you need for climbing? Are there certian kinds of shows that are better then others?

First of all, I would say that if you have a little bit of extra money, go to a small shop to make your first purchase. The person there is more likely to help you find the gear you need rather than the most expensive gear that they have, and he/she will probably make your purchasing experience more rewarding . If you don't have a small shop, go to REI, Galleons, or other large sporting good shopes. REI has a very good website, and also an outlet web site @ http://www.rei-outlet.com. For the gear that you need, first be sure to get a harness, shoes, an ATC (or similiar belay device), and a locking carabiner. If you like it, you can get a chalk bag and chalk too. As long as your friend has a rope and quickdraws, this is all that you should need. If he doesn't have this however, you probably need a simple 50m rope and 10 quickdraws. If you have all of that, you are completley set to go. Plan on spending around 300-600 dollars to get completly set up.

When I first started out, the first thing I bought was the black diamond momentum harness package. It comes with a pretty good harness, (I am of the opinion that you can't really go wrong with any black diamond harness) an ATC, a locking biner, a chalk bag, and chalk. The whole thing runs about $80 if I remember right. If you are climbing with other people that already have a rope and draws and the like, that's all you need to start out with. You should be able to find it on bdel.com or rei.com very easily.

You might also wish to try www.campmor.com or outbackgear.com. they have pretty good bargains most of the time.

The majority of my gear came from either www.barrabes.com or rei outlet with some shorelinemtn.com and thesnowleopard.com thrown in. I'm a bargain shopper.

Oof, okay, I had to mention MEC. I can't believe no one did, hehe.

Canadian company, great website, can be found here www.mec.ca

I got my shoes there but when I get back to Canada I plan on going to a smaller shop to get the rest of my stuff like a harness, biners, and the rest.

Cheers

Buy from small local shops near the crags. The benefits are countless. Saving a few bucks is O.K. in the short run, but without grassroots shops, climbers lose cohesion, information, personal service and often friends.

You should go to a small local shop. Use their climbing experience to help pick out the right gear for yourself. You can also get good beta as to the best local places to climb.

I like shopping on the internet because I can usually find some really good deals that I wouldn't be able to get locally. And the variety of gear is endless. However, with a local shop you can try the gear on first (I would recomend at least getting your shoes locally for this reason) and you don't have to wait a week for it to be shipped.
The only thing I can think of is not to get too much gear at first. Climbing isn't for everyone, and it would be a real bummer if you realized that you hate climbing just after spending hundreds of dollars on gear that you won't ever use again. However, I doubt that you'll hate it... CLIMBING RULES!

I have bought most of my gear at northern mountain supply (killer deals). The service is excellent and the shipping is really fast.
They have climbing packages put together for numerous types of climbing, check them out!

"ON CLIMB!"
"CLIMB ON"
grunt grunt clip grunt grunt clip grunt grunt clip grunt grunt clip
"Hey dude! Do we have enough rope?"
"YEAH MAN, CLIMB ON!"
grunt grunt clip grunt grunt clip grunt grunt clip grunt grunt clip
"OFF BELAY"
"BELAY OFF"
clip clip shuffle tie untie tie untie
"DUDE! YOU SURE WE HAVE ENOUGH ROPE?"
"YEAH MAN!"
"AIGHT! HEY TIE A KNOT IN THE END OF THE ROPE AND STICK A BINER TO IT!!!"
"OK"
"ON RAPPEL!"
"ON BELAY... DUDE! THAT'S THE END OF THE ROPE!!!"
"Shit! ON CLIMB!"
"CLIMB ON"
grunt grunt clip grunt grunt clip..
"OK, NOW TIE THE BIG ROPE TO THE END OF THE SMALL ONE SO I CAN PULL IT UP!"

Anyway. The point of this true story is..

DON'T BUY A SHORT ROPE!!!
(and to a lesser degree, dont climb with jackasses)

That's all i can say about that.

Buy 60 meter rope. Unless you plan on climbing REALLY SHORT Routes, you want that extra few meters...

I don't know why everyone hear is giving any advice. It seems they've all overpaid drastically for their gear. Check out www.climbonrock.com You won't find quality gear for much less.
