Howdy,
I'm heading out to Jtree next Sunday and staying til January 3rd. I was wondering how reliable weather forecasts usually are for that area. Last year I went over the same period and the weather channel predicted flash floods. We had sunny days the entire trip. I guessed that the forecast was a fluke, and I am hoping the same thing happens this year. The 27, 28, and 29th are all predicted to be rainy. Can anybody tell me how often the weather report is correct in SoCal.
Thanks
-Jamie

We have what is known as "The Rose Parade Effect". It seems there's always perfect weather for New Years Day and that fact is televised around the world. This leads to the influx of a few thousand more refugees from colder climes.

Odd's are you'll be fine. West coast forecasts are much more unreliable than the East. Afterall there aren't many weather stations between here and Hawaii.

Current and historical J Tree weather.

It was pretty crowded last year. But its not really a problem. There is enough climbing in that desert for everyone on this site.

Out of 7000 routes I think you can find something without a line. Might not be able to belay from your bumper though.

I was in Jtree from Dec.11-18 and the weather was great. A little breezy one night and chilly a couple of nights, but really nice during the days. A few days it was topless+shorts weather. No clouds. However, it apparently snowed around the 3rd week of Nov, so you roll the dice and take your chances.

I was there with a "regular" (a guy who's been to J-tree in Dec/Jan about 5-6 times), and he said that it was MUCH MUCH less crowded this year than usual and attributed this to the new $5 fee for camping and the enforcement of the 14-day maximum stay policy. See "Endangered Species Alert", Alpinist 8, p.15 for an amusing description of this issue. In any case, there were plenty of open spaces in Hidden Valley Campground the whole time I was there.

I'm in rainy gray Seattle now wishing I was back in Jtree. :(

Have fun.

The weather is really looking bad now...

How probable is it that this forecast will be correct?
