Book of Luke
Chapter 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2:1
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2:2
(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

2:3
And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

2:4
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

2:5
To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

2:6
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

2:7
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

2:8
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

2:9
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

2:10
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

2:11
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

2:12
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

2:13
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

2:14
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

2:15
And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

2:16
And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

2:17
And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

2:18
And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

2:19
But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

2:20
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Bob D’Antonio Attempts Comeback Tour!

Compelled to repeat the history of Elvis and die of constipation on a toilet in an undisclosed location with a stack of Nutter-Butters in his hand, Bob D’Antonio is a living homage to the fat and bloated Elvis Presley America came to feel sorry for and love through pathos.

Follow his exciting comeback special as he nearly dies of heart failure trying to keep up to his arch nemesis: his own bald spot reflecting back at him from the laughing mirror in front of him.

Everyone that chimes in either supports dorkos or points out to Elvis what a hypocrite he is, but the dilaudid addled brain of Elvis is compelled to die squeezing out one last turd on the toilet seat of life.

Bob D’Antonio, this is your life. Your toilet seat is calling you. Take your rightful place at the throne, King of Yourself.

Nice one polarwid.

atg - The local cathedral's version last night had them going to Bethlehem for an "inscription," I guess they didn't want to make us think about taxes on Christmas. Part of the story, though, I guess!

Peace y'all

What makes him arrogant? Because he posted something on a forum on a day which is officially celebrated due to the Bible passages he posted? Sound's mighty arrogant to me. I happen to agree with his post. You don't. The least you could do is show respect to those who agree and not bash something I believe in. I don't bash whatever you believe in. And I wouldn't. I respect you more than that, even though you have done absolutely nothing but insult me, and done nothing to earn or warrant my respect. I respect others' beliefs, whether they be Atheist, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Taoist, Shinto, etc.

I think JT doesn't like me. I see a pattern of insults developing here.

JT, you hurt my feelings. Please be nicer.

If you don't want to read it, don't open the forum. Free will is a great thing, it's even mentioned in the bible - Book of Genesis I believe. There is not even a "Repent ye sinners - the end is nigh" in the original post.

I understand that you probably have had a bad experience with Christianity but do a serious look at yourself and figure out why you are so defensive. If someone put a quote from the Koran, Mishnah, Torah, Diamond Sutra, etc. Would you be so offended?

There are christian climbers (Climbers for Christ)out there and they are as much a part of the climbing community as you are.

Shepherds in bible times did not speak old english. If i'm not mistaken, the verses quoted are out of the King James Version. I'm totally not dissing that translation, though it does have a few errors. but my point is, that's not how those shepherds spoke.

sorry, i'm really not trying to be a bitch, but i had to point that one out.

Well. No one in th bible knew how to speak english, not even old english. The shepherds probably spoke Aramaic.

Celebrating the change from increasing hours of darkness to increasing hours of light?

Solstice is the reason for the season. Jesus showed up on the scene much later.

Though I know this was the original reason, and that Jesus was actually not born on December 25...

The day is called Christmas, the day we traditionally celebrate Christ's birth. Hence the name. :)

If you're referring to the reason Joseph and Mary go into Bethlehem, then you're closer to accurate than the tax mentioned in the posting. The greek word is apographein, to go for a writing-in or a registration. Joseph was going to get his social security number.
