I submit that only gubmie (new) climbers read these forums. Whether it's looking for information they don't yet know, looking for other climbers, or just to see what it's all about, I don't think many seasoned climbers ever come here and actually spend time reading these threads, which, once you spend 6 months on this thing, all begin to recycle. The gumbies (to this site at least) don't bother searching for existing threads filled with 100's of replies to the questions they have. Instead they just post them again... and again... and again. Then there are the few knowledgable climbers who post responses to these repeated queries, but the arguing that pursues about technique, safety, and simply differences of opinions only amaze and confuse the minds of the unknowing. So let's here it... prove me wrong! Post this info and we'll see the trend: 1) How long have you actively climbed? 2) How long have you been a user of RC.Com? 3) How long has it been since you were an active poster on RC.Com? Me: 1) 5 years 2) 3 years 3) 2 years So, of my 5 year of climbing life, I only used RC.Com for only the 3rd year of it, which by then I was one of those self-proclaimed knowledgable climbers confusing the gumbies...

I've climbed longer than the sum total of all your responses. I've been active for only the last year on this site. In that year, I've at least paid attention to the proper terms. A gumbie is someone (beginner or not) who thinks he knows everything and is wrong. He comes up with rants and ideas pulled from his ass. He believes he is always right. Based on this definition, climberstephen is a true gumbie. A new climber is a n00b, he/she can be an idiot, or just inexperienced. Not all gumbs are n00bs and not all n00bs are gumbs. For further clarification, look into the history of the now martyred Dr. Kodos. As far as the originality of this post, I ask climberstephen to "do a search n00b" and furthermore, proclaim "STFU gumb!" That is all

1. climbing for 11 years, all kinds of climbing all over the world 2. first logged in to this site maybe 4 years ago 3. been active on this site the whole time and an unasked for #4 - i live somewhere with lots of good climbing i think you are wrong. the gumbie to climber ratio is unfortunately very high, but there are plenty of folks here who climb awfully well.

i think the usage of rc.com depends more on the user's job than his qualifications as a climber. If you sit all day in a cubicle, there is nothing like a little flame, spray or gumbiness in a thread here. Even with the overall poor quality there is always smth interesting to be dug out of the pile and amuze yourself with during the 8 to 5. On the other hand you probably won't qualify as a hardcore climber if you have a full time job - so maybe finally you do have a point  (sorry - i'm probably not seasoned enough to post to this thread anyway)

In reply to: 1) How long have you actively climbed? 2) How long have you been a user of RC.Com? 3) How long has it been since you were an active poster on RC.Com? I've actively climbed since very early in the 1970's -- approximately 35 years, if one does not consider top-roping as active climbing. I've been a member of R.com for about 2 years. Started posting the first day.
In reply to: So, of my 5 year of climbing life, I only used RC.Com for only the 3rd year of it, which by then I was one of those self-proclaimed knowledgable climbers confusing the gumbies... I'm not clear on what this has to do with your hypothesis. :?:

I agree on some points. I've climbed- 4 yrs Used RC.com 1 year Actively posted- 6 months It was facinating at first, but I rapidly became tired of self-aggrandizing know-it-alls bullying the nOObs and bickering about the same topics over and over again. I still check in and read from time to time to see if anyone has anything interesting to say. I mostly check the news forums and imformation on my local crags. I rarely post any longer.

In reply to: 1) How long have you actively climbed? 2) How long have you been a user of RC.Com? 3) How long has it been since you were an active poster on RC.Com? 1) 25 years. 2) 3 years. 3) Earlier today.
In reply to: ...So let's here it... prove me wrong!.... Looks like we have done just that. Besides, most of the world's weighty political problems are solved in the community forum here. Curt

Ive climbed for 3 years, used rc.com for six months, and if Im posting I have been active since I started using the website. Anyways who cared if the same stuff is regugitated, if it wasnt there wouldnt be as much to talk about or to laugh about. If you dont like the topics post up some obscure and disputed facts to argue over, or trip reports.

In reply to: I submit that only gubmie (new) climbers read these forums. I don't think it's that black and white. The (vast) majority of the users of rc.com probably fit into the noob or gumbie category - but not all. The (even vaster) majority (the DMT's of the world) think they have something profound to say most of the time. The signal to noise (or whatever cliche you like) ratio is pretty bad as a result. But there is still some usefulness here. The particular format and style seem to be especially attractive to the noob/gumbs - it helps the whole vibe of getting caught up in the Xtremeness of it all. That is versus the higher quality of our (almost) dearly departed wreck.climbing (and the shortlived and quite useful rec.climbing.useful). But the whole pattern here is not unique to climbing - it's just a characteristic of the www and it's ability to dumb down everything. And like Julia says - it's an amusing passtime. Oh - and have been climbing for 30+ years - North America, Europe. Been monitering and occasionally posting to these forums for a few years

I'm in the amusing pastime category Climbing almost 3 years Using RC.com since the beginning. It's how I found almost 100% of my climbing partners. Actively post everyday, although I'll admit, rarely outside community. That is where the amusement part comes in. As for "valuable" info, I still think an open minded and discerning journeyman can still gleen the occasional nugget of worth. And when used properly the access it can give you to people to learn from is almost unparalleled.

1) active climber for 3+ years (been climbing on and off 2 years before this) 2)At RC.com for about 2+ years? 3)Recently, I have been active. I think posts keep repeating themselves because at least for me the search function does not work... I mean not at all. Since the summer I have recieved an error message when trying to search for whateverI may be searching for.

It might be worth noting that most of the climbing community is probably classifiable as a n00b of some sort ("climbing community" here refers to the real climbing community, and not just the internet climbing community). There aren't many folks out there who can claim a decade of experience or some other landmark of "Elite" status. I would probably agree that most the users of rc.com are n00bs of sorts. I'm not a newb to sport or trad, but I consider myself a Big wall n00b. I would say however that a small percentage of the members contributed a large percent of the posts. Interestingly, the names I see contributing in mass quantity on rc.com are the same names I see blasting each other on supertaco.com. Therefore, I would suggest a severe revision to your claim: A small number of seasoned climbers dominate the internet climbing forums.

Climbed for how long: 2 years On rc.com: 2 years although I just read most of the time Active posts: I got flamed a couple of times so I don't post too much. As far as everyone on these forums being a gumby is concerned I have to disagree. Not more than a week ago I saw a thread about the history of rock climbing where none other than John Gill had posted a reply. If you need more experience than that your standards might be a bit too high. Having said that I declare myself a n00b and a gumby and no one should pay any attention to what I write.
