Is it just me and my computer or do others have these same problems? Rc.com is the slowest site I ever get on and I get a can not display this page message alot. I have been getting the message this morning. Sometimes if I just go to the page again it appears just fine.

it has been unusually slow lately. I figured it wasn't my computer since other wepages still zip by as quickly as ever.

I had to stop loading the page and was finally able to load the page an hour later. Maybe since nobody is working today the site is overloaded.

Same for me. It's not your computer, it's the site. It's been really irritating lately.

Long story short - we need a new server. Servers cost money. Since the site charges nothing for membership and you all get these great features developed by volunteer coders for free, advertisers keep the site in its daily routine. However, eventually - you need new hardware, especialy when it is being hit more then at least 7 million times a month.

Most of the time it is working great. But trust me, we understand your frustration when on occasion it is a bit dodgy.

We appreciate your patience when this occurs and invite you to make a donation.

Combination of factors led to a server crash. Then the notification emails about the server crash effectively mailbombed the site when it came back up. *boing* Another crash. Finally this morning everything stabilized. I don't know if this has anything to do with the additional traffic generated by the phpBB worm (apparently my decision to set the allow_url_fopen flag to 'false' some months ago saved us from any intrusions, but the thousands of other sites that got infected nonetheless have been visiting regularly of late).

This kind of shit always happens when I'm at a wedding, moving into a new apartment, or the like. Murphy's law is strictly enforced on this site.

A faster server with more memory would allow us to just failover back and forth between the two, but it's not cheap -- I'd guess $150/month for a while to pick up something worth paying to upgrade to. Redundant power, more memory, and serial consoles on both machines would make recovering from this sort of chain reaction a lot quicker. We'll live, though. Provided that everything remains stable, I'd rather pick up the tab for Eric's health insurance with that money.
