a quick question: i was playing around with some cams, building anchors and just getting a feel for placing gear and such, when i walked a cam way back into a crack and couldn't get my fingers on the trigger to get the lobes to relax. along came another climber who produced something that looked like a giant syringe and he proceeded to reach into the crack, fasten the end around the trigger and easily extract it from where i had gotten it jammed. what exactly was this he used and where could i find one? should have asked but it was a hectic day.

should have asked. probably a homemade item.

there are nut tools with twin hooks for cam extraction, but nothing, to my knowledge that functions like a syringe. thank your lucky stars he came along!

DMM makes a nut tool with double hooks on the handle end that works great. i don't have one (i use a regular BD), but my partner does and i've used it to retrieve a couple of cams that would have been otherwise lost.

you can also use 2 tools with one hook on each end of the trigger while pushing down on the stem

I remember seeing something like what you described in a book, can't remember which one now of course, but I think it was called a "friend of a friend." I dont, however, think they still make them anymore, to bad cause they look perfect for just such situations.

Yeah, that's a "friend of a friend" all right. They have unfortunately gone the way of the crackin' ups, the dragons, and the dodo. Those that have them surrender them only at great need. But few know of their existence.

I tried to talk Ed Leeper into making more cam extrectors once, he was not interested. Too many different kinds now he said. The original FoaF was for forged stem friends he said. People are better at getting cams out and not getting them stuck in the first place he said.

were you at Jtree?
I made one in '96 and someone stole it from our picnic table at Hidden Valley- It was BEAUTIFUL!

Mine looked exactly like a syringe, but it was aluminum, with a trigger bar protruding from either side; two protruding copper "fingers" up top and a static steel "thumb" on the shaft.

I called it, ahemm... "THE BOOTY BUDDY".

IF you see that dude again, ask him where he got it. If we find it's mine, I'll put together a ransom.

I have an old tool I swiped from my father-in-law's basement that I thought would work for this. It's 14" long and has a spring loaded trigger bar similar to the original Friends. But it only opens the L shaped end about an inch. I'm sure it could be modified to open farther and to have a "two fingered" pulling piece (needed for single stem cams), but I never bothered. It should be enough to retrieve U-stem cams that have simply walked out of reach, but not a piece that's really overcammed and needs to be pulled this way while it's pushed that way while it's wobbled like this.

For anyone who wants to know, pg. 234 of Freedom of the Hills has a little pick of the mighty Friend of a Friend.

Nut tool or a sling cunningly lassoed onto the triggers works nicely.

one good trick is to put the wire loop of a stopper on each side of a cams trigger, and pull on them while pushing on the end of the cams stem with a nut tool... if anyone understands what i mean

DMM has the nutter, a nutkey with two hooks at the right side of the nut key to retrieve stuck cams with. http://www.dmmclimbing.com look at products > crack protection > nutter
Good luck ...

You can also use two nuts to get a cam out. Just turn them around and use a loop on each side of the trigger and pull them out.
