It's not just today, but more like the past month or so.

As usual, no one wants rc.com to make any money preferring everything to be completely free, but then complains when the site has problems with the server loads. Tim is working on a solution.

Don't fix it then.

As usual, someone makes a sweeping generalization and, as usual, is somewhat incorrect.

Actually my lame attempt at sarcasm failed miserably which is why I stay out of the forums as much as possible. I just figured Dingus needed another reason to up the post count so I lobbed one up there.

Reality check - Tim is correcting the problem. Just upgrading the system because the usage keeps going up. Bear with us, we're working as fast as we can.

The only reason this site stays up is because Tim busts his ass to keep it running. I know that. That's why I didn't post initially.

Thanks, Tim. :righton:

both the webserver (physical machine) and the database server (progam) have been crashing over the past 3 days (unusually so).

We have been serving higher loads than at any point in the past and we are exceeding our capacity. In addition, the physical machine that usually serves most of the web traffic has been falling over repeatedly for the past 72 hours. This episode has been much worse than the occasional outages over the past month.

Fundamentally, I need to
1) figure out why MySQL (the database program) is crashing;
2) either fix the cause or (gulp) migrate to Postgresql; and
3) fix the physical hardware on the usual frontend webserver.

I am working on 1 and 2, and have contacted vendors for affordable components to perform 3. The latter is paid for by the supporting partnerships people have purchased. (thank you)

I also have a job and a doctoral program to occupy me. I do not like this instability any more than anyone else (and probably a lot less, because I get paged when it blows to bits). This is what happens when you serve 5 million pages a month off of a piece of garbage hardware :-?

Blame the higher use on the weather in California; it's too wet to climb outdoors, and I'd rather surf rc.com than go to the gym!

I have never been able to quite figure out this sites primary motive. Which is it :

1. Are you actually an entity with a genuine profit motive ? You are certainly trying to sell add space and generate some revenue.

If this is the case I have NO sympathy, and you guys should move out of the garage and get your act together. :x

or

2. Your true motive is altruistic and nonprofit. You want only to bring knowledge and comradery to the climbing world. You sell add space only as an attempt to help defray costs.

If this is the case I'll shut up and be patient.
:D

Like Mike said earlier, unless you (userbase, not just you personally) are willing to contribute, you should be patient anyway.

Sorta like complaining about who got elected when you didn't find it necessary to vote.

*this is the opinion of a user of this site and NOT that of site management*

asandh,

maybe the site is operating in a world where things aren't black and white, and being patient (or doing something else entirely than surf the internet and complain when a site goes down) would not kill you.

Not really. But as long as you guys don't see the instability, I suppose it doesn't matter.

Some of us contribute in ways that are more valuable to the site than 20 bucks.

You are absolutely correct Jay, some do, others don't and complain anyway

Let's not turn this into a pissing match about freebies v. paying, it's obvious I opened a can of worms when my sarcasm missed the punchline. For those wondering, we are working towards ways to continue providing the free goodies as well as creating some form of revenue to expand this site even further for the things you have requested. Tough business model but people are responding to the things we have been doing by creating a larger demand than ever before, and will only increase accordingly. We hope to have some full-time programmers in the near future so that site failures don't happen as often. Until then, we'll just have to keep feeding the hamsters and beating on Tim.

If you choose to diss at least have the chutzpah to defend your (possibly hasty) replies.

I know I probably don't have any place to say anything cause I'm a freebie, but is there a way to get some major sponsors to pay for some hardware? Like Rock and Ice that we tagged up with? or some outdoor company? *whimper* don't...hurt....me

One of the servers straight-up died -- no video out, fans spin but nothing happens -- after a motherboard upgrade and apparently overheating the CPUs on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. I had coincidentally pulled the primary database server out of DNS for 'www.rockclimbing.com' shortly beforehand, anticipating that doubling the memory in the second server would let us serve a lot more traffic.

Ummmm... d'oh?!?

I'm headed to Fry's to grab some replacement CPUs if possible (they're old trash, so it may not be possible... at least not at first) since that machine also houses some work-related databases (as in, it **was** more reliable than the existing hosting service for Epicenter, until very recently). Up until now, it's been possible to pay for hardware changes out of the user-donated 'slush fund', but I think I'm going to have to swallow this round.

The upside is that we will end up with a rather more beastly setup, and I think I've finally figured out how to get on top of the worm situation. Plus Eric will be back on Monday at the latest from Josh, and we'll try starting over again.

Right now I don't know if our one single server can handle the load of being exposed to all the worm traffic. If you feel like letting people know that 'www1.rockclimbing.com' is up and running, fine, but I don't think the site will survive being ''up'' for normal traffic loads until the slave server is fixed. Sorry.

Don't worry about R&I or other corporate sponsors, they're helping out in other ways, the same way as any other business (Patagonia, Black Diamond, Mountain Gear, Gear Express) looks out for your interests at the same time as their own. (The above list is deliberately skewed towards companies that have demonstrated they give a shit about Joe Q. Climber.)

If you're looking for something to do, go to http://friendsofqueencreek.com/ or http://accessfund.org/. There's enough there to keep everyone occupied for a while :-).
