Hey all, I was planning on going to Redrocks this Friday and Saturday but it with the rain it probably isn't the best idea. Do you have any suggestions of cool places to trad climb that have some bigger climbs (5+ pitches) within a few hundred miles of San Diego, CA? I could always go to J-Tree but I kinda wanted to go out of state to some place new. I was thinking possibly going somewhere in Arizona but I'm not really familar with what's to climb in AZ. Thanks, Robbie

A lot of reponse you got to this thread...nobody here climbs, so you probably won't get much help. Try the Granite Mountains...great unexplored spires of multi-pitch length. They are north of I-40 about 80 miles east of Barstow. Turn off at Kelbaker Rd. and you will see them to the north and stretching back to the west. No guidebooks or beta evailable...just tons and tons of great rock. Here is a picture I found on the web... http://www.death-valley.us/articles/desert_c/6.jpg

The problem is that about 20 years ago it was discovered by a prof from UCLA. He had the political clout to fence it off as a "Wilderness Study area" reserved for the enjoyment of those he deems worthy. Be prepared for trespassing charges if you go there. It was explored extensively in the 60's and 70's. J tree type rock, but most routes were only 3 or 4 pitches or less even with a 120ft rope.

There is plenty that is accessible...that professor has his little study center set up on the north side of the range looking out toward the Kelso Dunes with a little gate that says "No Tresspassing". You can go all over the area without tresspassing...I believe that to be an exagerated rumour.

You can go around the back and Granite Mtn. itself is a nice 3rd class adventure hike, There are probably plenty of other formations back there to explore, but the Materhorn and most of the prime formations and routes are in the professors domain.

I've driven by there plenty of times, but never investigated. I'm pretty sure it is a part of Mojave National Preserve so it wouldn't be to surprising if it was a Wilderness Study Area, having all the legal restrictions that comes with it. It would be easy enough to check with the park if you are curious.
