I’ve been putting off reading my “Alpinist 9” until I could really relax and enjoy it. Last night was just the time. I spent a couple of hours reading the once again excellent articles from mountains hither and yon. The problem came later when I went to bed. Much like a kid on Christmas Eve I had visions of runout mixed pitches high on Mt. Hunter, interminably long routes on ridges of the Trango Massive and suffering through exposed bivouacs on ledges well removed from an easy escape. All this is fine and dandy but at 53 am I crazy to still want, fanatically, to go to these extremes. While I’m still climbing well finding partners who would take off to areas beyond the ends of civilization isn’t the easiest, and am I foolish to want to still try. Back in my youth, read this 20’s, I managed to get to some bigger climbs, but recent years, the family years have kept me tethered to domestic crags & walls. So do I just read this stuff and go sleepless or do I throw down the gauntlet and organize a trip to Greenland, Pakistan or Chile? DO YOU WANT TO GO???? :? :? :?

Can i belay? I can hump large amounts of gear, sleep hot, work well on less sleep than most crytal meth-heads, and could learn to like not knowing where my next location will be. Youre not Nuts Jeff, youre perfectly sane.

most on this site, i assume, aspire to attain that level of comittment. i do. but we just have to evaluate our situation. i am a single dad with full custody of my son. i am bound to him for, well, a long time. which is totally cool. he's a climber, almost three with great natural ability. i just have to wait until he's old enough to realize and evaluate the situations he would be subjecting himself to before i could join anybody on a beautiful trip to patagonia or anywhere else. which brings me to "growing up in estes" This article breeds hope for our, my sons and mine, climbing future. when i even think about climbing my hands sweat, begging for the cool softness of my chalkbag.

Luckily I've seen my children grow to an age where they lead me whenever they get the chance. My youngest in her kayak and my oldest on the rock. So there is hope "Sirdrinksalot" and the passion is likely to never die.
