My Daughter's first Comp!

My daughter was in her first competition this Saturday and did awesome. She was the youngest competitor (age 8) and i was worried that all the problems would be too reachy for her (she's tiny). After struggling on the first one she attempted, she proceeded to flash three problems and then go back to finally tick that first one. She ended up getting second place in the 11 and under girls division (of course, there were only two of them). She got a ribbon and she had a lot of fun, which was all either of us cared about (the FUN part, not the ribbon). Go Dakotah!

I think it was USAC.

That's awesome!!!

Congrats to all of you, both competitor and parent, as I know it is often harder on the parent than the climber!!!

I hope your daughter continues to compete, for these reasons: New England seems to be on the fringe of USA Climbing, and yet the two NE divisions have great success on the National level. There is a huge void in these regions in the 11 and under divisions, and we would love to have Dakotah among our ranks. For all of our differences, NE North and NE South are like a big, happy family. Dakotah will learn to climb harder by competing with this wonderful group of kids, most of whom will give her beta even if it means she will beat them personally. I love USA Climbing for this fact alone: the competitors are all about helping each other and advancing the sport; those who value themselves over their peers tend to not do as well. You, Wonderwoman, and Dakotah sound like a welcome addition.

Please send me a pm if you have any questions about her competing. If you both decide not to compete then I will be happy, as a parent of a climbing daughter myself, to offer up a little hard won advice about keeping it fun and interesting. If nothing else, Meg and I would love to meet you somewhere in North Conway to spend a day cranking off some routes. As I said, just let us know!

Hey Skateman, you only need to say it once. Yeah, that little redhead seems all fired up. I especially love her shoes, with the flames on them. I wonder if they make them in adult sizes.

Thanks to both of you for the compliment. That little redhead is my daughter Lily! I must say, as a Dad, climbing is so much more fun when we climb together. In the 16 years I have been climbing, nothing even comes close.

I have also taken a cue from her and now really climb for the love of climbing (not for the ratings or the competition).

See you all at Metrorock!

And welcome to the site. From what I hear there is a shortage of climbers in the 11 and under division, so if Lily wants to, the competitions are fun, both for child and adult. I don't know if she is ready yet, i think everything would be reachy. We don't have any route setters that are less than 4 feet tall.
