Hey All,

I just wanted to see if anyone knew of any open climbing areas in Southern/Central Arizona (not more than 3 hours from Tucson). It seems like all climbing areas around here have been shut down. Mt. Lemmon, Cochise Stronghold, Rincons, Santa Rita's are all closed down from fire danger. Thanks for the input.

Hey, it's not quite 3 hours from here, but Jacks is open still.. but that's about it! I think the Dells in Prescott are still cool too. but other than that, AZ is no fun. I am sooo bored, watching Mt. Lemmon burn down and all

Camelback Mtn and Pinnacle Peak in Phoenix are open. As far as I know, the Dells are closed, but Jacks Canyon is still open. Try these links for more info...

Here is a list I received from the AMC. It has numbers listed so you can call for updates.
I believe the only thing open in Phoenix is Camelback and Pinnacle Peak. But it's going to be in the triple digits here, so climb really, really early.
I hope this helps.

Marnie, hon,

I hate to burst your bubble darlin' but the Dells are closed as well

As far as I know, Jack's, Camelback, Pinnacle Peak and Watson Lakes (in Prescott-go there maybe?) are the only climbing areas open until we get some drought relief.

The Dells too? Wah! Not like the Dells are my favorite but gosh, the options just keep dwindling, breaking my little AZ heart! But hey, as long as Jacks is good...
Sezumpf, unless you wanna bake like a batch of cupcakes in Phoenix, you're gonna have to drive more than 3 hours to climb anything What looks good in SoCal? Is there anything in San Diego worth road tripping for? Climbing + beach = 2x the fun!!

Tahquitz is in So Cal. I believe it is only about 5 1/2 hours from Phoenix.

J-Tree's weather forecast for this week shows highs of mid 80s and lows of mid 60s all week. I was out there a few weeks ago and it was gorgeous (and about 4 hours from Phoenix). Especially if you're used to the Phoenix heat...

Hey Arizonans...

I'm another sun-worshipping native and if any of you want to brave the heat with me. I'd be willing to make the short trek from Tucson to Phoenix to try out Camelback or Pinnacle Peak. (That is if 'climbsomething' doesn't drag me to California )

Thanks for all the input guys! I'm getting all kinds of suggestions in PMs too on where to go in San Diego. as for other SoCal spots, I've been to JTree once myself, had the bejeezuz scared out of me (got a healthy new respect for what 5.6 meant back in tha day) but what with that Climbing cover piece on bouldering I am thinking I could give the place another shot. I think I just had a bad JTree experience last time, it was January and gnarly cold and windy, and my partner was all into this bizarre, runout traddy slab stuff. I was all... no.

Anyways, do keep the suggestions rolling in for where to climb, if not here (since it is kinda off topic) than PM me

I went to the dell's today and since it is a park...from what I'm told... it was open! We were alone all day. Well beside the 3 stray dogs that hung out with us!

Is there anybody out there in the Tuscon/ Sierra Vista area who is planning on heading north for the weekend? I'm looking for a way to make it to Jack's or at least to Phoenix. If you or anybody you know will be passing that way and wouldn't mind a light-packing, friendly climber chick tagging along, let me know. Send me a PM or an email: acligas@hotmail.com

Cheers,

Andria

So does the state burn down every year, or is this just 'cause it hasn't rained sence February?

Actually, this is a fairly rare occurance.. well, shutting down the forests is anyway. That's only happened a handful of times. AZ is always dry, but this year has been crazy in terms of fire. The Catalina Highway (up Mt. Lemmon), rumor has it, is going to reopen this week though! Although I think people are limited to the road and Summerhaven, no walking among the trees and cacti to climb just yet... but it gives me hope

Oh, and on the topic of this thread, to any climbers north of Tucson, have any areas reopened? probly not, as there's been no rain, but wishful thinking...

Yeah, Catalina Highway opens to the public on Friday and I just talked to somebody who went up the mountain to clean his girlfriend's cabin today. Who knows when the climbing will be open, though....

Hey all,

Come on up to Jack's this weekend! It'll be a blast. I'll be there, so will 'sezumpf' and a bunch of other really cool Tucson climbers.

Hope to see you there,

Andria

I'm heading down to Tucson later today. Is there any outdoor climbing open or are the closures still in effect. I am particularly interested in Mt. Lemmon. If you climb in the shade early in the AM, is the temperature bearable? If so, I'd be interested in hooking up with someone to do some trad 10s (not bringing gear, however). Otherwise, I'd like to know if there's a decent gym down there. I won't be able to check my email after 4 today, so any answers could be posted here then.

Uncle...

Check out Rocks and Ropes for climbing indoors. It's a pretty cool place.

Per Mt. Lemmon, not sure what the status is, but here is a number you can call:

1-877-864-6985

and a website to check out:
