I'm currently in Joshua Tree and came from North Conway. Both are good towns, but I'm looking for that ideal finger crack, the icecream -sundae loaded- with- fudge -and- caramel of climbing towns. Somewhere that has rock, seasons, jobs, and good people. Where should I go?

how about the most underrated, possibly the best climbing town? Grand Junction, CO take a look at a map, is all i have to say You have good climbing in the monument, and bouldering in unaweep. Outside of town, it's an hour to rifle, 1.5 to ouray or the black canyon, 1.5 to fisher towers, castle valley, 2 to moab, 2 hours to elk range, literally, every kind of climbing close by. How come, you ask, climbers don't flock there like boulder? Conservatives, once again, ruin everything positive and progressive. I hate right wing religious idiots with a passion, a passion similar to that of the christ. That can all change once these backwards god-fearing idiots either die, or become out populated by young people who like quality, respect education enough to allow for progress, use logic in their reasoning, and basically stop ruining society with their 2000 year old tyrannies born out of fear, politics, and idiocy... If there was only a good climbing gym there...tho i hear jeff lowe is putting one in...

Squamish BC. A few years ago you couldn’t give property away in that town. Now you can’t pick up so much as a garden shed for under a quarter million. But still Squamish is better then most other “climbing towns” because it isn’t a tourist community, unlike so many others climbing towns like Canmore or Banff.

Duluth, Minnesota... We have the northshore, best ice in the midwest, only a short drive to the most over looked (except by ice climbers) area in the world (Thunderbay area)...plenty to play with...some ok jobs, anything you want to do outdoors you can do here...and we have some fine bars as well!

In reply to: South Bend, Indiana, definately. I'm sure there are some good lines on some of the old halls. The Dairy Queen is not far away on SR23. There are at least some jobs, and there is football season, and the off-season. Nah, Gary, IN would be much better. :)

Prescott, AZ. Not the best, but worthy. Granite Mountain, Groom Creek Thumb Butte, Promised Land -easy distance to zion, red rock, grand canyon (unexplored big walls in the SW), Flagstaff the ultimate climbing town should remain temperate so one can crank through the winter - Wal- Mart, Sprawl, old farts they got it all.

Squamish...... .....places to get cheap food, places to get good coffee, places to shower, places to hang out, places to camp free, places to swim, close to a big city, close to great (albeit expensive) skiing, the ocean, the mountians.........plus it has acess to bouldering, sport, trad, and aid......you can even go bag some peaks close by........ its only downfall is the rain..........

i have to say that squamish is hard to beat... you have awsome climbing from bouldering to big walls all with in a 20 minute walk from down town... whistler is like 30 minutes up the road... and vancouver is like 30-40 minutes down the road.... you also have awsome acess to some of the most amazing alpine climbing.. and un crowded mountains, in the world.. every none local guide i have met who has done a trip in the coast range cant figure out why there arnt more people and routes in the coast.. its nuts.. also there is lots of other things to do in squamish... from mountain biking to sea kayaking... awsome river kayaking.. it also has one of the most mild climats in the world... the only down side is the 5 months of rain.. but hey just going sking or kayaking..

in the past i would have said squamish. Now real estate is through the roof ~average house is more then $350-400k, Tourists are everywhere, a new highway is being built to get more fuckin tourists there, skiing is $75 a day and overcrowded. Oh, and the cliffs are swarming with climbers. And it still rains 7 months of the year. Squamish was probably at it's peak 3 to 4 years ago. I loved it back then.

I would argue that Las Vegas is the ultimate climbing town. Before you get up in arms hear me out. I can think of few other towns where you can find perfect climbing weather well over 300 days a year. There is awesome steep sportclimbing that is prime midwinter, long traditional routes up the beautiful canyons during the spring and fall and killer limestone during the summer when the temps soar. Furthermore, there is endless climbing a few hours up the road in St. George and Zion National Park. Other crags within easy striking distance are Owens, Needles and Jtree. For those who must boulder, I've heard there is an awesome spot in the desert north of Vegas. If you ever want to fly out somewhere to climb, you can almost always find cheap flights out of Vegas. Add in a large and varied climbing community and a pretty darn cool rock gym and I think Vegas takes the cake. I have heard many climbers say, "dude, there's no way I would live in that circus". Well I agree, the Vegas Strip is something to avoid. I lived out in the northwest part of town and only visited the strip when people came to town to visit me. One can easily position themselves within a 15 minute drive of great climbing. If you get off work at 4pm, shoot out and catch a pump in the afternoon shade. Many climbers seem to judge the prospect of living in Vegas based on their experience at the lame BLM campground. That's unfortunate or maybe good fortune for the current Vegas climbing community to keep the numbers from getting too large. Living in Vegas as a climber was downright easy. I currently live in San Diego and struggle with traffic through LA and Riverside everytime I want to go sportclimbing or up to the Sierras. I would move back to Vegas in a heartbeat if given the chance.

Vegas traffic is getting worse. When I moved down that way over two years ago, there wasn't a home between Best Buy and RR. This last years weather pissed me off. Summer ended, and April showers began to ruin most of my normally pleasant 3-day weekends. I don't know where the great climbing community is? I had better luck driving through the campground than I did post my name on the bulletin board outside of the gym. Maybe if I would have climbed inside the gym it would have been easier? It is a tiny fragment of a million+ population. The homeless have more claim to being a community in Las Vegas. No doubt, excluding the Strip except when friends in the Marines are in town or when you find a bachlorette party, Vegas is pretty cool, but I don't know about the best climbing town. Anyways, I would consider moving back there because it wasn't that bad. Plus it had a great all news NPR station. I could listen to the BBC in the late hours, it was great. Now I'm back to lame music in the late evening.

Sheffield's nice but Aberystwyth is definately the place to be. We've got lots of cold rain, and a mini indoor bouldering closet, and... well maybe it's not the best for climbing. But seriously has anyone ever been up to Betys Y Coed (sorry for the spellling) in Snowdonia? Now that's a cool climbing town. Jon

I agree, bounce the 1800Lotions forever!!!!
