Um, started soloing when I could walk. Mo Kunz got me started on rope when I was fifteen. Three months later, I bought gear and went outdoors. Living sans car in s. Indiana -- land of sandstone crags, limestone gorges, and bust-happy conservation officers (climbing is illegal almost everywhere in the state) -- made getting outdoors all but impossible. The summer after my first year of college, I hitchiked to Smith Rock then to Squamish. Since then, I've been on the road. Spent the last year and a half in the Himalaya and was shocked to find that there was no rock to climb (I'm not a millionaire or a local, which ruled out Himalayan mountaineering.) Moved down to Hampi for the season, then headed to Aotearoa for a season of sport climbing at Payne's Ford and bouldering at Castle Hill. Now I'm stuck in Welli on a work visa that won't let me escape, so I'm developing crags here. Next stop, the deep waters off the Cambodian coastline. Beware of pirates---aargh...
