I was taught top-roping by a British climber while at the Collage of Geographic Sciences in 1995, and have been climbing ever since. Moved to California in 1997 and was introduced to bouldering. Was heavily into bouldering for a while and managed a couple solid V6 problems and in 2004 I was very close to getting a classic V10 when I injured myself and had to take a break. I moved back to Nova Scotia in 2000 and started trad climbing because it was a requirement to get a Climb Nova Scotia top-rope instructor certification. Problem was that the more I learned the more I realized I did not know, so I never bothered to get the certification, but became a big fan of Trad climbing. On an interesting side not, I am scared of heights and while climbing on top-rope I would never quite able to convince myself that the anchor was real (you might call me an agnostic climber, since I find it difficult to believe in something which I can not see) so I actually find Trad climbing less scary than top-rope since I can see my anchors. Somewhere in there I started ice climbing, and while attending several CNS Ice Days events I got to know my future wife. Recently I have taken an interest in Aid climbing and am trying to figure out how to get myself some Russian Aiders.
I have been involved with Climb Nova Scotia since 2001 and was president of Climb Nova Scotia (climbnovascotia.ca) from 2004 up to the spring of 2006. Which admittedly reflects more on my credentials as a bureaucrat than it does on my climbing. I did however manage to negotiate the reopening of a climbing crag in a National Park where climbing had been banned in 2003, so I like to think I contributed to the good of the climbing community in Nova Scotia.
