droiyier grigri 3 out of 5 stars

Review by: kikibatlubbin, 2007-02-21

Rather than repeat anything, I'm just adding something new. GriGris are right handed. For those of us who are left-handed or ambidextrous this is a minus. It is possible to use lefty, but it is not the same (because of the lever). The ATC, reverso, B-52, etc., do not pose this problem.

Use it for TR's only! 5 out of 5 stars

Have seen quite a few accidents in the indoorhalls, those ppl only knew how to use a grigri, and thought other devices are used the same. That's why some climbers came in a "freefall" while being lowerd from a TR route. So this is a good belaydevice for the climbers who just started, just give them good explaination when using other devices!!!

Very Useful 4 out of 5 stars

When it's appropriate to use an auto-locking device, the Gri Gri is fine for me. I've mostly used it for solo top-roping. Rapping or lowering is always hard to keep smooth for me.

Great device 4 out of 5 stars

I'd have to agree with runner, it's a good belay device, but when switching from it to an ATC or a Reverso it can lead to unsafe belaying.

easy, but sometimes inconvenient 4 out of 5 stars

It's definitely easy to use, but there are a few situations which it doesn't fare too well, such as if you want to downclimb. For toproping and upwards climbing, it's very safe and convenient, but I've also noticed that it can lead to carelessness in belaying, so when people switch to ATC's they aren't belaying safely. Other than its con of not being useful for downclimbing, you can't beat its convenience and safety.
