Sure you can always find someone who knows someone who had one of these blow up in their face. I've used it for almost a decade now, and have never had a problem. whether burning white gas, alcohol, diesel, or regular unleaded gasoline. This stove works. e sure to use teh international version if you're burning anything other than white gas. It burns hot and boils water fast. You can bake or simmer on it, but you do have to play with teh stove more. just talk to anyone that's been on a NOLS expedition, they can teach you how.

While it's true that the Wisper Light is hard to dial "just so" if you want to simmer, I've not found this to be much of an issue: If I'm doing remote alpine/backpacking, I generally don't bring food that needs simmered. If I am "car camping" and have food that needs simmered, I bring a heat dispersal plate (available at REI.) Either way, I've found this stove to be reliable for my needs... melting snow and boiling water. The multi-fuel International is worth the extra few bucks, as White Gas isn't always available.

I'm not sure why this product is rated 3.83, since 4 is the lowest score I see... I have the Whisperlite Internationale 600. This is a great stove that excels at boiling water and other liquids. Lack of control makes it difficult to cook or fry food. Nine times out of ten I just need it to heat water or soup, and it works splendidly. I have needed to service this stove in the field on a few occasions, and the tools to get the stove up and running are all there.

Great stove. I have a few friends that have purchased this stove and it has aways fulfilled its job duties every time we used it.
