Alpine Equalizer 3 out of 5 stars

Review by: squirrelmaster, 2007-07-03

I own it. I use it. I probably wouldn't buy it again. It's a bit of a one trick pony. Once you knot it to elimate extension it doesn't equalize any better than a cordelette or webolette and a whole lot less versatile.

extension with overhand knot 1 out of 5 stars

the overhand knot in the center does not limit extension if either one of the side anchors fails. better use the clove hitches.

Got it on sale at REI and love it. Fast and easy TR set up.

I bought the 3' equalizer. This is great for making a quick anchor. It is super super light, the rings in the middle weigh close to nothing. I can rack this on one carabiner and it never gets in the way on a climb. There isn't very much extension on the 3' setup, but if its an issue, you can tie a simple and quick overhand knot in the middle loop and problem solved. If you're using a two bolt anchor setup, simply put a clove hitch in each carabiner and problem solved yet again.

This is a handy little gadget! A friend loaned me his on our last climbing trip, so when I saw it on sale at REI, I picked one up. It's light and can be rolled up into a compact bundle for clipping on the rack. Anyone concerned with extension if a piece of pro fails can simply clove hitch the legs to the pro (as noted in the description above). The only negative I see is the price -- I probably wouldn't have bought this if not for the big discount.
