First Ascent 5 out of 5 stars

While the title of the film offers an obvious suggestion as to the content of the footage, ultimately, the film is less about first ascents than it is on the essence of climbing. With a cast of well-known and able climbers such as Dean Potter, Sonnie Trotier, and Didier Berthod, we may come to expect flashy stunts and big falls. On this, film-maker Peter Mortimer does not fail to deliver. Nevertheless, to become caught up in this climbing porn is to miss the message and climax of the film, which surprisingly comes not with the climbing footage, but in the interviews that follow. It is during these personal confessions that we come to relate to the climbers and what they are doing. For it is then that Mortimer's film teaches us that even at the top level of climbing, the fear is still the same, the desire is still the same, and the will is still responsible for all of it. No matter how much we inflate our egos with sends of high grades or by climbing harder than those around us, it inevitably comes down to one thing, self respect. If we cannot climb for our own personal sense of discovery, we pervert our passion and only serve to stroke our own egos. No one sums this up better than Didier Berthod in his quoting of "Cool Runnings," in which it is eloquently stated, "The asshole who wins the gold medal is still an asshole." A fantastic film that will long remain as a classic. Support good directors, buy this movie."
