Matt Grieger on Valley 5.8, Owens 2
same climber, same route. The white stuff on the rock smears better than one might think.

Who is the tool that bolted that?

So what your saying is your too much of a pansy to carry gear for a long distance? LMAO

who is the tool that doesn't know anything about owens? believe me, when you're hiking out of the gorge at the end of the day, you're glad there's only draws in the pack.

I'll give the pic the benefit of the doubt though, because maybe the place is a total choss pile and you can't tell by the pic? Hopefully that's the case.
Yep, its a choss pile. Volcanic tuff at its crumbliest. Fun, though.
Oh, and it was Marty Lewis that bolted it. Author of the guidebook and about 400 routes there at Owens. While I may not always agree with his ethics either, he probably did more than any one person to make the ORG a great place to go climb. And, many of his routes he led clean on gear first and then bolted for the sport climbing masses. That way they actually get climbed. Very few lead on gear at the ORG.

kman: Peter Croft has repeatedly noted that placing cams behind flakes of volcanic tuff is about the dumbest thing imaginable, and ORG routes are best enjoyed as-is. Now go crawl back under your bridge, eh?

one good thing about kman's inquiry is it sent me back to the guidebook to figure out who put it up... i'd heard the bachar story before, but didn't know who had actually bolted it. thanks for responding, pyrosis and tim.

I guess I was soundly beaten to the comment of "Uh-oh, looks like you're out of gear. Run it out!"
