Rest Day by the Tuolumne

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Rest Day by the Tuolumne

The hike by the Tuolumne River is long, varied, beautiful, and calming to the soul.... Perfect for a day off from climbing in this summer haven.

A beautiful, warm start to the Black O

Average Rating = 0.00/5 A beautiful, warm start to the Black O

Too bad it didn't last the rest of the route. But that's another story...and shall be told another time.

I hate this route... Why do I always climb it?

Average Rating = 3.00/5 I hate this route... Why do I always climb it?

Competition. Masochism. I can't get a belay on anything else. My "friends" made me do it.

Too many holes, too much chalk!

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Too many holes, too much chalk!

And I still hate this route. However, on a winter day, these southwest walls feel like nice, warm ovens. :-)

If Ya Can't Beat Em...

Average Rating = 4.50/5 If Ya Can't Beat Em...

...traverse around em! Tried to pull the crux on an 11b to the right of this crack and when I couldn't, I put my runout head on and traversed over to this weakness and finished the second half of the route in trad solo style, traversing back to the chains at the top of the original route. It was groundfall potential but I lived to breathe another day thanks to the "leader must not fall" mindset. Oh yeah, and the crack was easy!

The most stunning view I have seen from the top of any dome in Tuolumne.

Amazing Grace

Average Rating = 4.67/5 Amazing Grace

Beautiful view of the Whitney Portal from Alabama Hills desert climbing area, July 2006. Not sure who in my group took the pic, so I will give credit to either junkman or his pal Kevin Kaullen from Cali.

Arabesque Mood at Dreamy Draw

Average Rating = 3.86/5 Arabesque Mood at Dreamy Draw

While hiking in the Dreamy Draw area of Phoenix Mountain Preserve, Aaron and I came upon this totally cool rock sculpture someone had built on the top of this hill (unfortunately the nearby bushes interfere with its complete photographic coolness factor). On impulse, we started a photo session...So ten years of ballet got me here! (...although 6 years out of practice now, sigh).

Is This All There Is???

Average Rating = 3.67/5 Is This All There Is???

Another fine shot by Aaron Locander, December 2006. Trying to pull the crux on this route; I sandbagged myself and believed it was a 10b since the topo did not list it. The crux is extraordinarily steep, thin, and sustained and really not well bolted for a sport route as there are at least 15 feet of dicey crux to the next clip. Kinda feels like someone yanked down your pants mid-route and is running a power sander across your @ss cheeks: each move was a sandblast yelling, "Take that! And that!" to me. =)

Daylight Come and Me Wan' Go Climb

Average Rating = 4.00/5 Daylight Come and Me Wan' Go Climb

Just starting my warm up lead. I should send this picture to adidas and get a fat endorsement for taking their clothing into the vertical world. These pants are more abrasion-resistant, comfortable, and stretchable than any $75 piece of prana **** ever made!

To Infinity and Beyond

Average Rating = 3.50/5 To Infinity and Beyond

A giant rim of majestic Cochise granite, washed in its trademark green veneer, rises overhead on Westworld Dome as my brother Laine finishes the first steep section on the 4th pitch of WarPaint, Christmas Eve day 2006.

H to the izz-O

Average Rating = 3.50/5 H to the izz-O

V to the izz-A - what else can I say about, dude, I gets bizzay! Here is a very old school but stellar 5.7 in the McDowells. I would say this is one of the MUST DO 5.7s in the state! Route is actually a bit steeper than it looks in this pic and the smearing is rather polished on the slab. I know the sky is over-exposed but my Photoshop skills aren't bitchin' enough yet to render it appropriately. March 2007.

It's the Bees' Knees

Average Rating = 3.00/5 It's the Bees' Knees

My brother hobbs024. Carrying a giant pack on lead for a 2-pitch route makes him feel hardy and immune to effort, like the stoic Norwegian Viking descendent that he is. The day this was taken was cold, gray and overcast (one of those 15%-of-the-year kind of days in Arizona...how unfortunate!), so I "posterized" it in Photoshop and not only made it look sunnier, but got this trippy-looking effect in the sky! December 2006

I find this photo interesting...Especially how you can just see my eyes over the rims of my sunglasses. It gives the appearance I just stopped to think about something other than climbing for a moment. April 2007
