Description:

FA: Leinau, Marks, Johnson/ March '05. Right facing corner opposite Green Eggs & Spam in Fox Canyon. A face move leads to a deep low-angle offwidth with twin hand-cracks in the back of it. Stay in or step out on the well-featured face. After a good stance, the crack goes vert on big hands/fists before leaning back to a huge belay ledge. The namesake fox beat a fleet retreat when we scrambled in to check out his canyon.

Followed the Onsight First Ascent of this offwidth/handcrack. Good climb with plenty of interesting jams.

Well worth the hike & scramble. We were a bit turned-around direction-wise, and just chose this line as the best one for onsighting purposes, based on all the cracks we'd been working of late. Berkly generously gave me the lead, using mostly his gear - thanks Chris! This is the only route I ended up climbing that day, and it was nevertheless one of my favorite days of climbing ever. Seeing the fox was a special treat, such a strikingly handsome creature. I didn't see his face as he was beating his retreat but his orangy-red sides and long body were unmistakeable below a darker brown coat down the middle of his back. Pretty big fella for a fox, too!
