"Hanging on a piece means so little, but it means so much." After I got out of the flared section, I thought I was at the top, but realized that I still had about 20 feet to go. It was a mental failure rather than a physical one. I'll go back to this one and get it clean next time. (Spoken like a true Chicago Bears fan.)

'been thinking about this one since March. Happy I finally got to the Red to get it. Despite the fact that you have to wait in line, it's a great experience.

The guidebook says that you can lead this 5.10bR with triams in small pockets. The way I see it, you're going to be soloing because even where you can set a tricam, the rock itself looks like it would break in the event of a leader fall. If you're not up to that kind of mental challenge (like me) I highly recommend leading a neighboring route and dropping a tr on this one.

This was probably one of the most enjoyable sport routes I've ever done. It begins with a face climb, then swings around a corner into an arete climb, so you get a change of pace halfway through. Kudos to whoever set this one.

You usually don't get this kind of exposure on a short, two pitch climb, (It's two pitch because of rope drag, not height.) so it's definitely a qualifier for my list of most fun leads. You need a few cams and/or nuts to protect the bottom section of each pitch. The second pitch is pretty crummy (the gully is filled with thorny bushes) until you get to the final slab move, which makes the pitch worth the effort.

I've read about how scary off-widths can be. Now I know why. We dropped a TR and did the climb, losing some skin in the process. While I hung safely on the TR, I tried to imagine setting pro--I don't think I'd ever put this lead on my tick list, but anybody who does has my respect and admiration.

I don't usually like slabby climbs, but this one has some interesting small ledges, and, dare I say, friction? That's right, friction at the lake.

There are some climbs that kick your butt and leave you angry, 'cause they're just not fun. There are other climbs that kick your butt and have you smiling the whole time. This one leaves you smiling. I'll consider this one a good project, 'cause I'll keep smiling until I get it clean, then I'll get a little uneasy, because I'll have to start working on "cop ripper" right next to it.

Eventually, this thing will tumble. It's not even a very good climb, but anyone who leads at Devil's Lake will eventually do it, because it's just such a cool looking rock formation. And yes, you do have to shake the top boulder when you get up. I wonder if anybody has ever climbed it a second time.
