Take two...
Climbed this one last year as a warm up (onsighted it then), this year as a last ditch effort to get some more time on the rock. Had my wife waiting for me to come home to our hotel room but had to plug some cams before I left the park... I think I placed, um, 5 peices on the whole thing? Wasn't that hard, fiddley gear at the start, solid till the chains, fun climibing the whole way. Would highly recomend this climb, but would suggest tape if you're not used the the rock in J-Tree. It'll eat your paws for lunch, as if they were Nickin' McNuggets.

Freakin' A!
This thing was HARD! Had to cheat. Twice. Don't really count this as an ascent, but since I had just lead double cross, we rapped down and thought we'd give it a try on TR. I think that perhaps 11a is fair, I'm just better at jams and cams than crimps and clips. Perhaps on my best day, I could make it up without hanging or falling, but not today my friends, not today.

Um, Kate, could you send up that nice green cam? oh, and a big bro... the motherland needs them...
I love/love offwidths. well, at least all the ones I've done... I got on this one after I had seriously misgaged the gear and had to have holdplease2 send up gear. Twice. Once, she needed to send up her #6 tech friend. Then a few big-bros. But I did all this gear whoring from stances and didn't weight the rope. Does this count as onsight? Maybe I'll say redpoint, since I kinda botched it. But I made it up without falling, had a great time, and actually enjoyed myself. I didn't even really struggle, thought it was a little harder than a 7, but not by much. Loved it. I recomend it, unless you've got a thing against the wide stuff.

Thanks for the belay, Chris!
Had a year to think of this climb. I tried it last yeat and logged some flight time off the crux. This year, I came back after spending a lot of time thinking of the beta, and finished it clean! Had the wife there this time to watch and take pics. She didn't like it, said it was too cold. She even found a puddle that had frozen over! Yikes! Thought we left Alaska, but guess not!

where's the good gear?
Scary. Don't recommend. Couldn't find any good placements for the whole top half. Lots of pockets, but none of them seemed any good to me. And I looked. Ran it out, fall would have been a grounder, for sure. I really like the climb, I just dong think I'll ever lead it again. I also don't recommend that anyone else ever lead it unless a bolt is added or a pocket is found, or something. This is one scary climb...

took three whips off the crux at the top then I found the corner on the right hand side and it was all good after that. But the three falls, man they were scary, 20+ feet onto a 1.5 tricam.

Ascent Note
So I was on my way out of Josh Tree and I really wanted to do this crack but my partner wasn't feeling up to it. So I asked a boulderer who had just put his crash pad down if he wanted to follow and clean for me (there's no rappell off this one, only a down climb). He said he'd never really climbed trad before and would be willing if it meant he didn't have to place any gear. I asked himif he'd climbed cracks before and he said "Nope." I said "well, you won't have to place any gear, just take it out." He threw on his harness and we were off. Loved the climb, second only to Illusion Dweller in my mind, didn't loose too much skin, and the other guy said he loved it too. He had a huge smile on his face as he came over the lip at the top... And so another boulderer perhaps steps into the world of trad...
