pre-placed the gear and went pink-point, whatever that means. I top-roped this route for years before going for the send, so I'm proud of that one.

I somehow ended up with the first pitch lead. Luck of the draw hey? I found it very demanding, and it felt like a pretty committing 5.8. The rest of the route was much easier and more enjoyable. A must do, but let your buddy go for the first one.
