Belaying on long steep ice routes can be pretty damn frightening. How good at dodge ice are you?

I once belayed someone at the gym who really freaked me out. He had already nearly kicked my friend in the head taking a 20' whipper, but I figured it was just a stupid mistake. Every single clip he made I thought he was going to bail. He climbed like he was doing the robot on acid. Oh man, not fun. Other than that I've never had any problems belaying. Nobody's launche significant amounts of rock or ice at me... yet.

more scared to belay, you have someone's life in your hands, usually a great friend. I would still feel bad if i harmed them in any way.

Belaying scares me more. I usually am belaying my best friend, so it scares me to think I could possibly be the reason he gets hurt. Climbing is much easier. You just get up and go, and check every now and then on how your belayer is doing. Belaying is definately more scary

seconding on long multi-pitch routes is way more scary than leading. Sometimes, I hate to belay on long routes with the leader out of site, the rope not moving, clouds rolling in.....anexity sets in, I'm like "what the hell is going on up there." I would much rather be in front, knowing what the deal is.

Both. I once pulled a briefcase sized rock off a climb and launched it straight toward my belayer (one of my best friends). All kinds of loose s--- was falling after it, I was screaming "ROCK ROCK ROCK!!", couldn't hear anything from him for 20 seconds or so. Those were the longest seconds of my life. I was positive that rock had just crushed his skull. Fortunately there was an overhang right in front of him, as soon as he heard me scream he ducked for cover. The rock hit pretty much where he had been standing. We both pissed our pants.

Why fear belaying as long as you've got a good belay device, solid rope and a strong clip your laughing. I fear climbing more 'cos you dont know wot your partner is doing and that next bolt seems so far away, I cant stop thinking about where I'm gonna end up if I fall and where my precious noggin will go. maybe its cos I havnt fallen yet? I'm 15 and have been climbing for 1 year I climb 6a 6c does this mean I'm good or just a pussy?

I agree that seconding on a multi-pitch route is scarier than leading (unless the route allows clear communication with the leader). Having poor communication with your belayer is very dangerous. -jj

Belaying is definitely intense, and those who know it are the good belayers. Radios make a world of difference for long trad. "What the hell are you doing" is a fun question to yell into the climber's ear at the crux.

i agree. belaying can be pretty scarry at times. i guess it is bec when climbing you have more to focus your mind on than when you are belaying and really the only thing you have to think about it the other persons life

i remember learning to belay lead climbing style at a gym during a leadclimbing course. To practice catching a big dynamic fall, the instructor told us to give out about 2 to 3meters of rope and then told the climber to fall. That scared the hell outta me because the climber ended up just off the ground and i was above him; almost a groundfall. the worst thing was i knew he was going to fall like this and there was nothing i could do about that cause we were practicing right so i cant take in any slack. On the otehr hand, taking a fall like that was pretty cool; its a safe, overhanging wall and the dude teaching us knew from experience how much slack the belayer could give without resulting in a groundfall.

If you're more afraid belaying then you need to start leading some scarier routes.

Belaying scares me. Mostly because all of my friends weigh more then me and it's hard keeping both feet on the ground.

My partner was leading the 4th pitch of the Bastille crack and I was belaying. He put a stopper in 3 ft above the belay and started motoring up the large crack. 20 ft. up he slipped and went sailing. I was directly below him and thought for sure he was going to nail me and I would let go of the rope. I grabbed the rope hard and sucked into the rock. He hit my pack on his way down and broke his ankle. A little below a factor 2 at around 40 ft. I spent the next hour lowering him off. We spent the rest of the day at a bar in boulder laughing it off...now he is taunting me to climb it again.....I get sketchy thinking about it

Jughead: "Why fear belaying as long as you've got a good belay device, solid rope and a strong clip your laughing." Climb outside on some ice sometime and you will know why. I get nervous belaying when ice climbing.

Speaking as a newbie and only one trip experience, neither task worried me at all. They guy I went with was confident which in turn made me confident. He taught me the basics of belaying within 1/2 hour and off we went to do some climbing. I belayed him on lead without any problems. I've been reading and learning a lot about climbing so when I went everything I was shown would make sense and it definately paid off. I don't have any idea what I would do if I started feeling scared during either task. Guess I would call it a day and figure out why and try to make the necessary adjustments to eliminate the fear factor.
