I've seen the same thing set up on Animal Magnetism in Squamish. Looks fun IMO

Now, the question remains: how big would it have to be, in order be able to free solo El Cap in a totally safe way ??

Regarding the net, it seems like a whole lot of effort to go through just to make it appear like he free soloed the route.

I want to play! I wonder how hard it really is to rig a net. Looks like fun.

Really, you mean that the nets that are used in the circus are not 5' of the ground. You mean they have to compensate for the weight of the person/s that might fall in them. Thats a concept. edit to add: Or any fall net that is used recreationally or occupationally.

It will also save you the trouble of re-climbing the part you fell off

"How to fall without a rope" use a base jump parachute. As Dean Potter did on the Eiger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf49cw0134U

I may be over reacting here, and if so, sorry, but... Do we really have to perceive every new or unusual thing in climbing to be some sort statement on ethics or style? This is just some folks doing something interesting and video taping it. End of story. I'm sure if we try hard enough we can figure out a way to fight over this, but in the end it just looks kinda fun to me.

On a semi related note, there's an article in Rock and Ice this month about an art project that Emily Harrington was part of. They used layers of cardboard boxes to protect a 90 foot solo inside a museum. The top layer of boxes had the corners cut off so that the air could come out of the boxes if they were compacted. They also shot a stuntwoman taking a fall from the top of the wall, and had her land on a giant airbag.

Isn't a stuntperson fall onto an airbag fairly SOP?

Saw this at the Squamish film festival two years ago. The entire audience gasped when he fell. Josh
