hello i had an accident 2 days ago with a motorcycle chain, i lost 2 cm of my right thumb.
the doctor says i'll have full movement and strenght in about 6 months but ill have to learn how to use my new recontructed thumb.
my grip will definitely change not necessary for worst but no one knows until full recovery.
any one with a similar injury that can tell me about their experience and how it affect his climbing ??

Tommy Caldwell has done alright with a modified digit.

I expect to see you free climbing the Dawn Wall project in a year or so.

My right thumb was smashed flat in a climbing accident a few years ago and is now about a half an inch shorter than before. Fortunately everything healed up fine and I've had no issues with it whatsoever.

protect it until it is fully healed, then desensitizing will probably be the next step. Sometimes rushing people re-injure their limbs before they are ready, which can lead to further problems like a bone spurs, neuroma or just a funky pain. I see this in leg amputees sometimes. The skin will close us first but the underlying tendons, fascia, bones, nerves, etc are much slower to heal. Something like hitting your thumb while climbing could damage those areas again. Luckily the thumb is mostly used for closed crimping and it sounds like you might have enough of your thumb to do that anyway. But I wouldn't rush it.
