Description
The C.A.M.P. YO-YO is a self-arresting device for belaying the leader or second, top-roping, and rappelling. It's very similar in design to the Wild Country SRC (Single Rope Controller). Both create friction by the upwards pull on the carabiner. A quick/hard pull on the rope forces it into a V-shaped notch thereby achieving full lock, a feature the SRC lacks. It works with a single dynamic rope of 10-11mm only, and requires a pear-shaped HMS carabiner be used.

Used it for years with no problems

Bought one in 2000 when I was sport climbing a lot on Portland, UK. It takes some practice to get the hang of using it smoothly, especially for belaying a leader. Its main advantage is that it always locks and there is no chance of screwing up the system and dumping your partner (unlike a gri-gri) - I've used it on every trip to the wall that I've made in the last 8 years. It is great for top-roping with a partner who takes a lot of rests, but with practice is also good for belaying a leader, as should they fall immediately after you have paid out slack for a clip, there's no danger of the rope ripping through your hands due to the momentum of the falling leader (as would happen with a non-locking device). The point made about trapping your fingers would appear to be valid on first use of the device - but again, once you overcome initial unfamiliarity, there's no problem.

I completely agree with the previous review. Plus if you rope gets a bit old or wet it is almost impossible to feed.

This is the poorer man's gri-gri.
I personally hate this thing, I have used it quite a few times and it just strikes me as one of the more useless belay devices around.
On the down side: you can only use ropes from 10 to 11mm, the lockup is instant and cannot be controlled which makes it a terrible leader belay device, you need an HMS biner to be able to use it, it can hang up on the biner and hamper your belaying efforts... and I wouldn't want to get my finger caught in this thing, which could happen more easily than with most other belay devices(BDs). Self belay is possible but not as smooth as with other self-lockers.
On the good side: The only thing it's good for is belaying on toprope and it shines in this role... that is if you have all the requirements to make it work properly. this is the only reason I don't rate it a 1. Also it's impossible to thread it backwards and think you're doing anything right, better for beginners.
Bottom line: very specialized gear, use one and give serious thought about what you'll use it for before you buy it.
