About Churchman's Brook:
With around 60 routes this is one of Perth's most popular climbing locations for the easier grades, but there are also some harder climbs. The cliff is dolerite and up to 30m high. There are lots of easy trad lines, and top ropes can be set up pretty easily. Access to the top of the cliff is easy, and you can reach the top from both sides. There are also quite a few bolts installed at the top of climbs to make anchors. It can get quite hot here in summer, and the cliff is in the sun until about 2pm. Churchman's Brook is not a good place to go to after rain! All the dirt washes down onto the cliff and it gets very dirty and the ground can get a little muddy. Also the cliff does not dry very quickly. There also seem to be a lot of these centipede/worm-like looking bugs around. The best guide book is Perth Rock Climbing Guide as there are lots of photo topos and descriptions. West Australian ROCK and Perth ROCK also provide a guide, however there are no photo topos, only hand-drawn ones. All of these are available from most outdoor retailers. For more info see the CAWA page or the Climbwest page. |

Directions: | About 45 minutes drive from Perth City. Travel south along Albany Hwy from Perth. Before the intersection with the South West Hwy, turn right into Carawatha Ave. Continue along Carawatha till the end of the road and then turn left into Carradine Rd. Then take the next left into Canns Rd. Continue on Canns Road until Churchman Brook Road (turn left). Go along Churchman Brook Road for about 1km and then turn left into a dirt road (where the Darling Range Regional Park sign is). The dirt road leads to the carpark. The walk in is about 10 minutes, there are now two different paths to the bottom of the cliff. Unfortunately break-ins have been fairly common at the carpark, so make sure you take everything with you. |
