Description: A crag of somewhat questionable merit, and much too wet to be climbed in the winter. Does offer a handful of easy sport routes and a couple of reasonable crack climbs. It faces west, so is sunny in the afternoon and is well protected from nor-easters. Approach: Park at Evans Pass and walk up the Crater Rim Walkway toward the west until you come to a saddle. From the lowest point in the saddle looking toward Lyttleton, the Asteroid is to the left and Coalditz proper (very red lichen covered rock) is directly below the lookout point. The easiest access to either section of routes, is to rappel off the respective rap chains/rings. The rings on Coalditz proper are a bit hard to spot, but are at the very end of the ridge running south of the lookout spot. |
