About Charleston:
This area offers a good collection of sea cliffs up to 40 meters high and all within close proximity of each other. The rock is rough compact gneiss/granite that is generally solid and offers great smearing. Approaches are all walk in, walk off, but care needs to taken with changing tides, which can flood the approach/belay ledges. Virtually no bolts/anchors to be found, so bring a good rack of wires and especially (tri-)cams. The Charleston Motor Camp is an easy 10 minute walk from the cliffs, the pub is about 100m down the road from the Motor Camp. This is possibly the closest triangulation of essentual services and climbing available in the country. Free camping can also be had at the Reserve, which reduces the walk to the cliffs by a few minutes. |

Directions: | Charleston is about30km south of Westport. the climbing is split into two primary areas (North and South), which have to be accessed separately, even though they are not very far apart. The northern cliffs are approached by driving to the cemetary just north of town, and then continuing westward on foot, to the coast. The southern cliffs are approached by following the Constant Bay walking track southwest from the carpark (not the Loop Track, which branches northwest). |
