About Esk Buttress(OS):

An excellent crag with the finest position in the Lake District. South facing, with about 40 routes Hard Severe to E5, almost 250 feet tall. It is, however, the most remote crag in the Lakes, so much so that no one ever goes there except on a superb day. Then expect to find it very busy.
Nearest town or city: Boot
Directions: OS 89 & 90 -- GR NY 223 065 Alt. 420m 4.5 miles NE of Boot, marked Dow Crag on the OS map. Be sure you are equipped for a good twelve-hour day. From Boot, drive west up the valley for a little over two miles to the River Esk at Brotherkeld and park. Head up the valley to the north, after half a mile, Yew Crags can be seen up to the right, and after one mile, Heron Crag can be seen on the left side of the valley. Continue on and after 2 miles, follow the main river to the left and start uphill. After two more miles, the path levels out in a fantastic valley, where the crag Cam Spout will be seen up to the left. Walk one more mile up the valley to the crag which is straight in front of you. At least two hours without rests, and the valley floor can be very wet.
