About Pont-Caffino:
eheh! Pont-Caffino, aka Château-Thébaud... A red granite crag located on both sides of the Petite Maine (where you can canoe too if you want). Its main interest is to be near Nantes, in a flat area, so it's like when you really NEED to climb, you go there! On the right bank of the river is the small sector, small because the routes (20 to 30) are between 10 and 20 meter high. There are approx. 20 routes on this side. On the left side is the "Grand Secteur" : few routes but up to 40 meter if my memory is correct. The routes are also harder here, over 5.10a, whereas on the small side they are mainly in the 5th french grade. When I used to climb there (1995 and 1996, at my beginnings, this sector was forbidden, and we had to go through a hole in the fence to climb on it. Don't know how it is now... Directions: | 22 km or 30 minutes from Nantes downtown. From Nantes, drive southeast to Vertou, then Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine, then the samll village of Château-Thébaud. In Château-Thébaud, drive down to the river, and park just before the bridge over the river. Walk 3 minutes to the small sector, on the same side of the river. Walk 10 minutes after crossing the bridge if you want to climb on the high sector. On the road, you will notice all those Martyrs and Virgin Mary, remains of the after french revolution era where Catholics fought against Republicans, making thousands of dead persons in the area south of Nantes. Still today, Nantes is a deep Catholic area in France! |
