About Peñalara:

Peñalara is a Regional Park in the Sierra de Guadarrama. It is the highest mountain in Madrid. Actually it is not very high (2500m), but winters there can be pretty cold. It is possible to rock climb there from May to November. Otherwise it is better to take the ice axes (several ice falls and "couloirs" are formed during the winter). It is a very good place to learn and practice climbing on self protection routes. Most of the routes are low level ones, with mixed protection (you always find some bolt). Rock is very good quality granite. You will find lot of cracks, although it is possible to find some very good bolted slabs. Grades goes from 5.6 up to 5.12. Be careful because as it is a Regional Park, some restrictions apply. For instance camping is absolutely prohibited (there is a hut near Puerto de Cotos).
Nearest town or city: Madrid
Directions: Peñalara is about 80km away from Madrid. You have to go to Puerto de Cotos, following the same road that goes to Navacerrada and Valdesquí ski resorts. There is a huge park at Puerto de Cotos. You have to take there a way that in 30-45 minutes reaches the Laguna Grande de Peñalara (The Big Lagoon)and the Zabala Hut. Almost all the climbing routes are around the lagoon and by the Zabala Hut.
