Perhaps the best kept secret in Spain, Sierra Espuña is a quiet valley with thousands of sport and trad climbs at all levels, crag and multi-pitch, and everything from caves and overhangs to slabs. Sport climbs are intelligently bolted and routes are well thought out. Most of the climbing is limestone, though there is an aggregate crag to be found behind the Archeological museum in Alhama. The nearest cities are Murcia, then Alhama de Murcia, and in the valley is the small village of El Berro. Having a car is highly adviseable as most of the climbs already involve a 45 minute to 1 hour approach after driving to a hiking trail head. It is well worth the hike. The crags are quiet and climbing is possible well into November, though the nights can be windy and cold. After climbing, try the wonderful and friendly bars in town for some fantastic tapas. Unless you're a vegetarian, you will think you are in heaven.
