About 03. Yalta adventure (Ai Petri, Shaan-Kaya, Marcheka):
Yalta is a tourist port on the Black sea coast where you can find good accommodation and transport to visit numerous trad or multi-pitch areas.
The areas are numbered as they appear from left to right, as going from Sevastopol to Yalta. You can find aid climbs on Marcheka or some hard sport multipitch (i.e. the recently developped 8b 8-pitch Atlant-M) on Shaan-Kaya. For more relaxed alpinists, go to Ai Petri, enjoy the scenery and make easy moves to get to the top in the steps of the first Crimean mountaineers. Beware that numerous multi-pitch routes lack in-situ protection - only a minority is bolted. You will need your full rack, slings, maybe even skyhooks and aid gear for some. Rock being limestone, protection might be tricky - come prepared, open your bag of tricks and enjoy! Yalta is also a well-known tourist destination to start your visit of Crimea's sights. It is here, at the White Livadia Palace that the peace conference in 1945 took place to end the WWII. You can go to Alupka or Foros for more palaces and historical visits. Contact the local tourist office for camping and hotels information - or see here. |
