Both local guidebooks give inaccurate information on how to get to this cliff. Follow these directions and you should not get lost. Drive to East Sooke Park and Park at the Aylard Farms Parking lot. Take the service road trail from the northwest end of the lot and follow it toward to ocean. Pass a few turn offs and stroll by Mirkwood Forest along the way. As long as you stick to this road and don't take any turns, you will end up at the Gazebo along the coast trail just west of Beachy Head. At this point, turn WEST (right). Ahead of you you will see a small island just off the shore. Keep this in mind as a landmark... Follow the coast trail through some bushes and scramble up some rocks. Eventually you will top out and lose some elevation again. Whe you find yourself right next to the little island, you will start going up hill directly inland. At the top of this hill there is a cut stump and the coast trail takes a sharp turn left. Ignore this. If you look straight ahead you will see a faint trail and some YELLOW FLAGGING. Follow this. It is not well travelled, but improves as you move inland. As long as you look for the line of trampled salal and keep the gully to the left you will be all good. After 150m or so, the supposed 'trail' crosses this gully and heads uphill, the cliff will soon come in to view. Its unmistakeable white 11a crack sticks out like a sore thumb. Take off your pack, put on your rack, and have fun! |
