About Tunnel Section ICE:

This is a rarely visited area, but is a paradise of thick, steep ice that line the walls of a mile long canyon. The movie RUNAWAY TRAIN was filmed on these tracks, so you can actually see the canyon before you head there. The Tunnel Section is quite remote by usual standards, requiring a ten mile ski or snowmachine journey to reach. Access to the tracks is questionable, and engineers have been known to call the State Troopers. This area is for experts only! Access to medical help is at least ten miles away, so experienced climbers only should climb here.

Directions: The approach starts at the intersection of the Seward Highway and Portage Glacier Road. Ski south for six miles down the railroad tracks where you will find the first section of icicles. Ski four miles farther south to reach the actual tunnel section, where there is a total of five tunnels.
