Realm of Refuse
About Realm of Refuse:
Four 20ft vertical climbs which are easily top roped by draping your rope over the stout black pipe/12in I-beam combo. Ice screws may come in handy to protect creative climbers. One traverse route circles the entire pillar of ice. |
Approach: | Take Hula Hula Ave. south out of the village for about one fourth of a mile from the last cross road (9th St.). The sewage plant is the only building south of the village and the dump pipe goes east, directly from the building to the lagoon by passing under the road. Upon reaching the gray plant building, follow the black pipe to the edge of the tundra then scamper down the bank onto the polar ice cap and the bottom of the climb. Alt. route: hike east out of the village across the tundra to the 15ft tall snow fence and the east bank of Barter Island. Follow the coast line south about a quarter of a mile from the southern end of the snow fence until you come to the ice pillar extending below the black pipe. |
Approach Time: | 10 min walk from village |
Latitude, Longitude: | 70.11865, -143.60042 |

Sun returns rapidly (hour plus per week) between end of January and April with 24 hours of light starting mid to late April. Overcast much more common than clear skies. |
