About Thumb Butte:
A basalt formation on the west side of Prescott. Faces and clean crack routes up to 250' long. At almost 6000' with most lines on the north face makes it a decent place to climb on warm days. There are also some good basalt boulders down among the pines nearer to the parking area. |
Nearest town or city: | Prescott |
Directions: | From the town square, keep heading west on Gurly St. which becomes Thumb Butte Rd. to its end at the Butte parking area. ($2 except free on Wed.) Approach is via a paved loop trail with its apex at the saddle beneath the south end of the crag. Once at the saddle look for faint use trails heading to either side around its circumference. Be prepared for some significant bushwhacking and scrambling to get to some of the established routes. Look out for possible Peregrine closure Feb. to July 15. Call Prescott NF (928)443-8000 for update. |
