About Bulldog Canyon:
There are two ways to access Bulldog Canyon Recreation Area. The best way to get in is near the Salt River. Either take the AZ 87 (Beeline) north to the Bush Highway intersection and turn right on Bush Highway and then continue on Bush Highway until you cross the Blue Point Bridge (over the Salt River) and your next left will be a gate to the Bulldog Canyon OHV Access Area. There will be a sign. You can also get to this same entrance by going north on Power Road out of east Mesa which turns into Bush Highway. Follow Bush Highway until just BEFORE Blue Point Bridge and the gate will be on your right. Once past this gate follow the packed dirt road across the plateau a couple miles. The trail will drop down into a sandy wash (4x4 might be necessary). Turn right into the wash. Follow the tracks in the wash until you find rocks you want to climb about 3 to 4 miles in. Leave the same way you came. The other way to get to the climbing area basically requires 4x4 unless you have a high clearance vehicle and aren't affraid to use it. This entrance is off of Usery Pass Road. Take Power Road north to where it turns into Bush Highway. Turn right at the stop sign next to the Salt River Tubing and Recreation place. Drive a couple miles until you go through a sharp s-curve in the road. The gated entrance will be on the left and it will also have a Bulldog Canyon OHV Recreation Area sign. Again, follow the main trail until it goes up a BIG hill and then down a BIG hill into a wash. Follow the wash around until you find rocks you want to climb. (I think the other route from the Blue Point Bridge entrance is shorter.) Both of these gates require a combination to open them. The combination is given to you on your Tonto OHV permit so refer to ACCESS ISSUES for details on how to get that. |
