About Black Rock Spire:

The rock is dark sedimentary shale with a lot of flakes and fractures which makes it extremely unstable and unsafe to climb. The main spire which is approximately 30' high and it is not possible to set up a safe anchor anywhere on the rock due to its unstable nature. The summit is comprised of loose rocks with a small manzanita tree growing out of it. Please exercise extreme caution when climbing in this area. Poison Oak is rampant in this area making many of the routes inaccessible. Please do not disturb the plant life in this area and tread lightly.
Nearest town or city: Willits
Directions: From San Francisco, take 101 N to the town of Willits. Approximately 20 min past Ukiah turn right on Baechtel road. [reset trip odometer here]

Turn Right on East hill road. [.2 mi]
Veer left at Y [1.1 mi]
Turn Left on Eastside Road [2.6 mi]
Veer Right at Y (Hearst Road) [4.0 mi]
Turn Right on Canyon Road, which winds up the hill [4.9 mi]
Veer Left at Y (Tomki Road) which turns into a gravel road about 1/2 mile after the fork [7.4 mi]
Turn Right at "T" intersection onto Hearst Willits Road - Sign on tree "Willits / Hearst 5 mi" [9.2 mi]
Turn Right at Foster Mountain Road [11.7 mi]
Drive about 1/8 mi and park. If you get to a adobe arch that reads "camp n sons" you've gone just slightly too far. The rock will be visible from the road and is only about 50' away. Access Issues: The boulders are visible from Foster Mountain Road. Park along the side of the road, close to the edge, so you don't block any traffic. This is private land so please ask permission before accessing the area.
