Wawona Dome
About Wawona Dome:
This 700' dome is located above the town of Wawona, just inside the Southern entrance of Yosemite National Park. The mostly clean cracks interspersed with knobby and dike-ridden granite face pitches are similar to Tuolomne or Lover's Leap. Wawona Dome faces Southwest so most routes get sun from mid/late morning till sunset. Elevation at the base: 6000 ft. A little toasty in mid-summer, Wo dome climbing is best in Spring, Winter (snow depending) and Fall. |
Approach: | From Highway 41 at Wawona take the Chilnaualna Falls Road 1.8 miles to where the pavement stops and the road becomes bumpy but mostly passable dirt(Dirt/bump averse drivers can leave their cars here at the Chilnaualna Falls Trail parking lot and walk the last 1/4 mile). Continue over a one lane bridge and stay left until you can turn left up a steep road after a two car carport. Park a few hundred yards further where a chain blocks the road. Continue hiking up the road(approx. 3/4 mile) 30-45 minutes until the trail opens up with expansive views of Wawona Dome. A climber's trail branches off left here more directly toward the dome but if you miss it the old fire road you are walking on will eventually bring you within a few hundred yards of the base. Approach time: 45-60 minutes. Elevation gain: 2000 ft. |
