About Ponderosa:
Good bouldering on volcanic rock. Warm, sunny, low elevation at The Pond to cool, shady high elevation at Spider Canyon. Rock quality is highly variable, from utter choss to bulletproof. Generally, the darker the rock the less chossy but also less featured. |
Nearest town or city: | Ponderosa |
Directions: | Find the town of Ponderosa on a state map, it's a few miles East of Jemez Pueblo. Continue through town East on FR10. The first area is just above the reservior (The Pond). A short hike East from the Pond gets you to slightly less chossy but also less developed stuff. About a mile East of the pond is another nice boulderfield. A few miles up the road is Peck's Peninsula (AKA The Ridge) and a half a mile above that is a canyon heading North (Spider Canyon). Many other areas even less developed. If you turn North on FR293 about 1/2 mile West of the pond, there is more good rock. A few boulders near the FS corral have been developed. |
