About Umstead Boulders:
| THIS AREA IS OFF LIMITS... There are many boulders in this area. A handful of them are coveres moss. The rest of them are returning to the earth. They are limestone boulders and the acidity of the water in the river nearby is causing them to disintegrate. Many of the boulders show scars from hikers climbing them for a better view of the river. Officials have declared this area off limits to bouldering due to these conditions. Plans are underway to place a sign on the trail saying so. The Umstead State Park website is also being updated to reflect this policy. |
