About Sitting Bear:
This is a free-standing pillar on the same ridge of Linville Gorge as Table Rock and Hawksbill. The pillar is on a lower part of the ridge beside the summit of Sitting Bear mountain. The 6-7 routes on Sitting Bear are mostly vertical sporty face climbs. There are bolt anchors on top of the pillar so rapping off is easy. |
Nearest town or city: | Morganton |
Directions: | Same dirt road as Table Rock and Hawksbill if you come from Gingercake. Sitting Bear is the first crag on the road. There is a sign on the right side of the road that says "Sitting Bear Campsight." Park here (on the right side of the road there are small parking spaces) and hike up the obvious trail. Ignore all of the side trails and hike on the one that follows the ridge. After hiking for about 5-10 minutes you will come to a very steep hill. Hike straight up the hill past some boulders and an overlook. Sitting Bear is on the flat ridge after the hill. |
